Personal Statement

I coach and recruit at Hesston College because I believe that we daily make a positive difference on campus, across the street, in the states and around the world. I love being part of the Hesston College community because I believe we are using academics and athletics etc. as a vehicle to witness to people daily. I work at Hesston College because I believe we aim to further students spiritual growth, academic growth, and other specific interests - in that order. I work here because I believe we make our students "world bigger - while strengthening their foundation."
My greatest joy being here is being a small part of the growth that our students experience - when a student comes to me and says, "Dustin, you were right. This place is amazing - I'm being encouraged, challenged, and I'm changing everyday!"
My background both academic and athletic shapes my coaching philosophy in one major way - that being, I want my players to be successful! First in their faith journey - spiritual growth - I want them to leave and have a better understanding of Jesus and his life - and have a better relationship with Him. Secondly, I want them to value and enjoy the opportunity to obtain a private education - to understand that long after the ball quits bouncing - that their education will prepare them to think critically about themselves and others around them - that their education will prepare them to have the courage to make solid decisions in their places of work - worship - and in their homes. Finally, I want to maximize the gifts they've been given athletically! Make no doubt about it - I want them to have no questions of how good they could have been!
My mentors are my family. I have a mom and dad who have shown - not talked - but lived what it means to be a hardworking, Christ-centered. and positive famlily. My two older sisters also have a major influence and impact on my life. I've learned so much from my family and they continue to shape and mold me!
In a prospective player I look for someone who can be successful in a private chrisitan academic setting, someone who is ready to work hard first in the classroom and then on the court, someone who is relentless on the court, but also respectful, someone who is curious and willing to learn, someone who has the courage to maximize their potential.
I want to be successful in every way with my basketball teams. I want these young men to grow spiritually. I want them to walk across the stage during graduation in two years. I want them to have an awesome experience at Hesston as a whole. I want win basketball games doing things the right way - playing together - winning as a team!
Varsity athletics play an exciting role on our campus. Playing a varsity sport in college is a priviledge - not a right. Our athletics come secondary to academics and players who aren't interested in being successful academically won't play for me. I care too much for my players to not offer them the greatest gift college can provide - an education!
