Preparation Tips

  • Mock interview: Ask a teacher, parent, youth sponsor or other mentor to help you prepare by conducting a mock interview. Use the interview to become comfortable in a question and answer setting. In addition to answering each question, give an example or additional idea that illustrates or elaborates on your answer. Try to avoid filler words such as “um,” and to be able to think quickly to avoid large gaps in the conversation. If you need time to think about a question, practice how you will handle that and what you will say in asking for that time. Maintain positive and professional body language. Have your practice interviewer give you feedback about what you did well and where there are opportunities for growth.
  • Prepare three questions to ask your interviewer. Asking questions at the end of an interview signals that you have done research about the organization at which you are interviewing, in this case, Hesston College. In an interview, you typically ask questions like: How would you describe a typical day at this organization? How would you describe the organizational culture here? What advice would you have for me as a potential new person to this organization? etc. Research Hesston College’s mission, website or history to prepare thoughtful and interesting questions. It is common to have these written down and ready in order to not forget them by the end of the interview. Also, be sure to turn your phone off and put it away. This signals to the interviewer that you are engaged and ready.
  • Complete the StrengthsQuest Inventory. You will need to complete the Clifton StrengthsFinder which will take about 30 minutes. After you have reserved your spot, we will send a card with additional instructions and a code to complete the StrengthsQuest test for free. Review the information and know your top five strengths from your StrengthsQuest test in ranking order. Print your Strengths Quest results so you can reference them during your interview or strengths session. More information can be found on the StrengthsQuest website.

What was something you gained from the Lark Leadership Experience?

“Before the weekend competition, I was still deciding on college, but afterwards I knew Hesston was the right decision for me. It was a different experience than a regular visit, and it provides so many more opportunities.”
