Men’s soccer drops close match to Dodge City

The Hesston College men’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to the visiting Conquistadors from Dodge City Community College Saturday evening.

After starting out strongly in the first ten minutes, the Larks gave up a goal against the run of play to go down 1-0 in the 15th minute. It took only five minutes for Dodge City to double their lead, forcing the Larks to play from behind.

The second half was positive for the Larks, as they moved the ball well and controlled the majority of possession. Sophomore Josiah Borst (Becker, Minn.) came closest to scoring in the 80th minute, forcing the Conquistadors goal keeper to make a kick save on a 1v1. Consecutive corner kicks from sophomore, Ryuta Hayakawa (Kyoto, Japan) late in the match were scrambled away from danger as Hesston College was unable to find the net.

“The energy of our players, whether they started or came of the bench, was extremely high throughout the match, giving us great value,” said Head Coach Matt Gerlach. “We had the run of play in the last 20 minutes to make it dangerous, but just couldn’t get that goal to make it interesting.”

Men’s soccer will hit the road Thursday, Oct. 13, traveling north to face the Barton Community College Cougars. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. in Great Bend.
