Music instructors to showcase talent

A recital featuring Hesston College private music instructors will be at 3 p.m Sunday, Nov. 21., in the Hesston Mennonite Church sanctuary. The recital is free and open to the public.

In addition to teaching, each of Hesston’s seven studio instructors are accomplished solo performers.

“Events like this are important moments for modeling high artistic standards to our students, while providing education and entertainment for the campus community,” said Bradley Kauffman, chair of the music department. “The program represents the gamut of musical experience offered in our department from guitar to organ, and baroque to twenty-first century music.”

Faculty performers include Ken Rodgers, who has been teaching at Hesston College since 1988. He conducts the Chorale and teaches piano, organ and courses in music history and the humanities.

Kristin Shaffer teaches flute at Hesston College and Bethel College (North Newton, Kan.). She has been principal flutist with the Newton Mid-Kansas Symphony Orchestra since 1996 and was principal of the Hutchinson (Kan.) Symphony from 1998 to 2006.

Holly Swartzendruber teaches voice at Hesston College and Tabor College (Hillsboro, Kan.). She has performed in many operatic roles including “Cosi fan tutte” and “The Marriage of Figaro,” and has performed soprano solos for Handel’s “Messiah,” Brahm’s “Requiem” and the Mozart “Requiem.”

Howard Glanton teaches private guitar at Hesston College and Bethel College and maintains a private teaching studio in Derby, Kan. Glanton has competed in numerous international guitar competitions. He is a member of the Piu Mosso Guitar Duo which has toured throughout the Midwest and recorded two albums.

Rebecca Schloneger teaches violin at Hesston College and is the director of Suzuki Strings at the Bethel College Academy of Performing Arts in Newton, Kan. She is a member of the first violin section of the Wichita (Kan.) Symphony Orchestra.

Matthew Schloneger serves on the voice faculty of Hesston College and is a Ph.D. student in vocal pedagogy at the University of Kansas (Lawrence). He is an active performer in oratorio and opera having appeared with Wichita Grand Opera, the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, Opera Theatre of St. Louis (Mo.), Cincinnati (Ohio) Opera, Opera Kansas and Opera Theatre of Lucca (Italy).

Timothy Shade teaches low brass at Bethel College and Hesston College. He is also instructor of music and director of instrumental music and music education at Bethel College, where he is responsible for the Bethel College Chamber Orchestra and Bethel College Wind Ensemble. A versatile performer on two instruments, euphonium and trombone, Shade has performed in numerous venues from cruise ships to concert halls.

The Sunflower Trio was founded in 2002 and is dedicated to performing music featuring voice, violin and piano/organ. Members include Rebecca Schloneger, violin; Matthew Schloneger, tenor voice; and Ken Rodgers, piano and organ. The trio excels in a variety of styles from Baroque to contemporary, folk and Broadway.

Located 30 miles north of Wichita, Hesston College is the two-year liberal arts college of Mennonite Church USA.
