Music Department to present spring concert

The Hesston College Music Department will present a spring concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 23 at Hesston Mennonite Church. The concert will feature Bel Canto Singers, Hesston College Chorale and Wind Ensemble.

The concert is presented in conjunction with the college’s Alumni Office, and Hesston College alumni and friends are especially invited to attend. A reception will follow the concert, which is free and open to the public.

The concert will be an eclectic mix of pieces with styles as diverse as renaissance motets and jazz.

The Wind Ensemble will perform jazz and concert band standards, including a Charles Mingus piece titled “Boogie Stop Shuffle” arranged by Andrew Homzy. The pieces performed by Bel Canto will feature sophomore singers’ favorites from this year’s repertoire, including a traditional English folksong, Irish Sea Chanty and an African-American spiritual. The Chorale’s performance will feature a traditional South African piece as well as “Kyrie,” from Miss Sine Nomine a4 by Palestrina, which will be directed by Dmitry Bucklin, student conductor.

The Wind Ensemble and Bel Canto Singers are under the direction of Bradley Kauffman, chair of the Music Department. The Chorale is under the direction of Kenneth Rodgers.
