Sophomore Liz Sowers of Hesston has earned a place on the
National Junior College Athletic Association Division II All-American
Women's Basketball Team.
Sowers was named second team All-American for a season in which she led the Larks
in scoring (606 points, 18.9 per game), steals (50), and minutes played (990).
In her Hesston College career she set game (45), season (606),
and career (1,100) scoring records.
"This is a well deserved honor for Liz," commented Coach Joel Kauffman. "She
had a great two years for us at Hesston. She's one of the most competitive players
I have ever coached and is a great teammate. I'm proud
of her and her accomplishments!"
Sowers will play next year for the Grizzlies of Oakland University, Rochester,
Mich., where she will pursue a degree in visual communications. Oakland's 2005-06
season ended with a first-round loss to Ohio State in the NCAA
tournament.
Sowers was also named to the NJCAA Division II Region 6 first team, along with
her twin sister, Katie. Leslie Giesen, a sophomore from Anthony, Kan., and Tana
Nelsen, a freshman from Dorchester, Neb., were named to the all-region
second team. The Larks finished their 2005-06 season with a
19-13 record.
Katie Sowers will transfer to Goshen (Ind.) College to pursue a degree in secondary
education and physical education and play for the Maple Leafs. Leslie Giesen
plans to attend Wichita (Kan.) State University, majoring in math
education.
"This year's team was an interesting one as we had eight freshmen and only
four sophomores," Kauffman noted. "For us to win 19 games
is a real tribute to how hard the freshmen worked to adjust to this level and
to the excellent leadership that the sophomores provided."
