Coach's Comments--
A beautiful day for a soccer game turned into a day we wish we could forget. Coming into the game on a four-game losing streak was difficult in of itself, but things were not going to get any easier playing against one of the best teams in the Region away from home. Barton County had just come off a solid win last Saturday against perennial Region VI powerhouse and undefeated Cloud County 3-1. Cloud is always competing for the our regional championship year after year. So for Barton to beat them 3-1 says a lot about them. We knew that this was going to be a tough game.
Things started out fairly well as Hesston was able to not only thwart most of Barton’s initial attacks, but were able to move the ball around. At first I thought our only problem might be that we weren’t being aggressive enough in our attack by making too many short passes and not enough through passes to put us up the field faster. But then things started to fall apart. Hesston found itself down 1-0 fifteen minutes into the game as Mario Ulloa beat a couple Hesston defensemen in the box to score the games first goal. Mario is easily the best player in our region and will definitely be an All-American candidate by season’s end. I knew he would cause us problems. He’s very quick with excellent ball skills. Craig Mast actually took the ball from him a couple of times today. That’s the first time I’ve ever seen anyone take the ball from him. Which says a lot about both players.
The Larks began to unravel after the second goal scored by Barton’s fast, quick and slippery forward Cory Guilherme. Guilherme placed a hard shot just beyond the reach of Hesston’s keeper Kyle Beun. At the point they scored their second goal I was just wishing the clock would move faster. We were playing into the wind and getting very disorganized. Had the half ended right there I think we could have regrouped. But the time seemed to creep by for the Larks as Barton scored yet one more goal before the end of the half. Defensively we just weren’t recovering and moving quick enough as we had in previous games. Too many players were getting caught watching the ball instead of focusing on their defensive responsibilities. Offensively we were putting some nice passes together at times but not being aggressive enough going to goal.
The second half only saw things get worse as BC tallied 4 more goals. It was a bad day all the way around it was difficult to find much positive about the game especially the second half. For the first time this season I thought several players just gave up and that disappoints me more than the score. Even in the Neosho game when we didn’t play well we still battled hard. Today it just looked like guys weren’t mentally ready to play and when things went bad it was clear that some wished they’d never gotten out of bed.
The Larks get a much need day of rest before they prepare for their away match against Rhema Bible College in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma on Tuesday September 24.
