The Hesston College volleyball team will hold a fundraiser to benefit the family of a team member who recently lost her father to an automobile accident. Ivan Ediger, father of freshman Sherresse Ediger (Meade, Kan.), passed away early Wednesday morning, Aug. 20. In response to the accident, a donation box will be available during the home scrimmage on Tuesday Aug. 26 and the Larks home-opener on Wednesday Sept. 3 versus Allen County CC, with both matches beginning at 6:30 p.m. All donations will be given to the Ediger family.

Looking ahead to the 2008 volleyball season, the Hesston College Larks will depend heavily on a talented group of incoming freshmen to continue the program’s recent success. Coming off a 26-win season, the Larks return just three sophomores, led by Kory Hiebert (Goessel, Kan.), last year’s team leader in blocks.
Coach Vanessa Schroeder is confident that several of the newcomers will make an immediate impact on the program. “With freshmen Danielle Minder (Remington, Kan.) joining Kory, we have the potential to be a strong team up front,” she said. “Danielle led her team in blocks last season, so I’m excited to see what we can accomplish. This team has the potential to be the best blocking unit we’ve had during my tenure here.”
Outside hitter Bonnie Heinrichs (McPherson, Kan.), setter Jo Carlson (Hillsboro, Kan.), opposite hitter Malerie Hertzler (Halstead, Kan.) and defensive specialist Sarah Masenthin (Chapperal, Kan.) are other new faces expected to make an immediate impact this fall.
Along with Hiebert, the Larks will look to sophomore opposite hitter Annali Murray (Orrville, Ohio) and sophomore outside hitter Rachel Steckly (Milford, Neb.) for experience while the younger players adjust to college competition.
Key dates on the Larks schedule include a season opening tournament at Allen County CC, August 29-30, three non-district matches against Texas teams Clarendon CC, Vernon College, and Brookhaven (recent Division III National Champions), and the Hesston College Invitational September 26-27. During the first night of the Invitational, the Larks will sponsor a “think pink” night in which team members will wear pink jerseys, and proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer awareness.
Key district contests include a September 12 trip to Overland Park, Kan. to compete with Johnson County CC and hosting Cowley County CC on October 1.
Entering her 11th season as Larks volleyball coach, Schroeder has compiled a 229-188 career record. Melinda Stuckey, a Hesston College graduate and 2004 all-district team member, will be in her first year as an assistant.
