Hesston College announces Bryan L. Kehr of Goshen, Ind., as its new head coach for women’s soccer. Kehr will immediately be involved with recruiting and signing athletes, though his coaching responsibilities won’t begin until August.
In addition to his work as head coach for women’s soccer, Kehr will be director of intramurals and an instructor for physical education at the college.
“I feel very fortunate to land a coach with Bryan’s credentials,” said Art Mullet, Hesston College athletic director. “He has a wealth of soccer coaching knowledge
and experience, especially with women’s soccer. I’m also very pleased that, because of his background, he understands Mennonite education and philosophy and will be a natural fit to the athletic department, as well as the campus community in general.”
Kehr currently serves as athletic director and instructor at Bethany Christian Schools in Goshen. He launched the varsity girls’ soccer program at the school 11 years ago and has led the team to four sectional titles and one regional title.
Kehr is a Goshen (Ind.) College graduate with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and a minor in family life education. He has coaching licenses and certification from both the United States Soccer Federation and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Kehr is a member of Berkey Avenue Mennonite Fellowship in Goshen where his wife Anita serves as pastor.
Hesston College freshman midfielder Marly Richison (Houston, Mo.) found the back of the net four minutes into the overtime period on Thursday night, giving the Larks a 1-0 win over Allen County Community College (Iola, Kan.).
The Larks outshot Allen County 7-3 on the night, with Jessica Davis (Newton, Kan.) and Amber Repp (Vally Center, Kan.) each collecting two shots-on-goal. Lark keeper Emily Toews (Whitewater, Kan.) recorded the shutout win in goal for Hesston.
“What a good feeling to finally get a win,” said coach Kurt Hostetler. “The girls have been improved their play in each of the past five games and they deserve this victory. They knew they could win and battled hard to prove it.”
Up next for the Larks is a fall break trip to Texas, where Hesston will take on Ranger (Texas) College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, and then a 1 p.m. match versus Western Texas College (Snyder) the following day.
On a cold Tuesday night Hesston College tied the Coffeyville (Kan.) Red Raiders 1-1 in a double overtime match. Hesston was able to control the ball offensively and had a lot of chances but couldn’t capitalize to get the win.
“Tonight we did a good job of pressuring Coffeyville,” said coach Kurt Hostetler. “We were able to generate turnovers that led to several good chances.”
Led by Brittany Albrecht (Sebewaing, Mich.) with three shots and the lone goal for the Larks, the offensive attack showed marked improvement. Freshman Janna Kaufman (Friedens, Pa.) and Kelsey Schrock (Wellman, Iowa) each recorded three shots. Freshman goalie Megan Leatherman (Hesston, Kan.) saved 7 of 8 shots for another impressive performance in goal.
“During the overtime periods I felt that we were the dominant team,” Hostetler said. “Unfortunately we were not able to capitalize on our chances down the stretch, but the girls battled hard the whole game and they should feel good about their efforts.”
The Larks, still looking for that elusive first win, head to Iola, Kan., to face Allen County Community College on Thursday, Oct 15 at 5:30.
Cowley County Community College (Arkansas City, Kan.) earned a road with on Saturday, October 10, knocking off the Hesston College Larks by a 4-0 score.
The two teams battled throughout the first 20 minutes of a scoreless match before the visitors took the lead. Cowley made it 2-0 with less than eight minutes to go in the first half and added two goals early in the second half to set the final.
Brittany Albrecht (Sebewaing,Mich.) recorded the only two shots-on-goal for the Larks, as they fall to 0-13 on the year.
“The girls played a good game, we missed several good opportunities that would have helped us gain momentum,” said head coach Kurt Hostetler. “Jessica Herschberger (Shipshewana, Ind.) and Jessica Davis (Newton, Kan.) were both strong on defense tonight. One thing that I can't say enough is that this team always continues to battles to the end of every match.”
The Larks welcome Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College to the Hesston campus on Tuesday, October 13, for a 5:30 p.m. match.
The Hesston College women’s soccer team hosted the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (Miami, Okla.) Lady Norse on Thursday, dropping a 3-2 decision. Hesston was able to score a few goals early but weren’t able to hold the lead against the Norse offense in the second half.
The Larks got on the board first when freshman Janna Kaufman (Friedens, Pa.) put one into the net at the 13 minute mark, while Larks goalie Megan Leatherman (Hesston, Kan.) held the Norse scoreless in her first half. Early in the second the Norse’s Shelby Tinney evened the score. Then Kaufman struck again at the 11 minute mark giving Hesston a 2-1 lead. From here the Lady Norse scored goals at the 21 and 28 minute marks to take a 3-2 lead that proved to be the difference.
“Scoring first was a huge boost and we were able to keep the pressure up for most of the first half,” said coach Kurt Hostetler. “Despite the loss, I feel that the girls are playing well, the best they have all season. We're getting opportunities and we were able to net several tonight.”
The Larks host Cowley County on Saturday at 5:30 still looking to pick up their first win of the season.
The Hesston College women’s soccer team surrendered a goal midway through the second-half that proved to be the difference maker in a tight 1-0 regional matchup.
Brittany Albrecht (Sebewaing, Mich.) had two shots-on-goal for the Larks, while freshman Janna Kaufman (Friendens, Pa.), finished with three shots, including one on goal. Hesston keeper Emily Toews (Whitewater, Kan.) had an excellent day in the net for the Larks, stopping 12 of 13 shots.
“We played well again today,” said Coach Kurt Hostetler. “We moved the ball around and created a few good scoring chances. The girls are playing with more confidence the last couple of games and just need to find a way to find the back of the net.”
Hesston travels to Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College on Monday, October 5, for a 4 p.m. match in hopes of notching a win.
The Garden City (Kan.) Community College Broncbusters rolled into town to face Hesston College on Thursday, Oct. 1, and came away with a scrappy 3-0 victory. Hesston failed to capitalize on its scoring attempts and had a few defensive lapses that the Broncbusters converted into goals.
The Larks were led offensively by freshman forward Janna Kaufman (Friedens, Pa.) recording five shots, including two on goal, while fellow freshman Jessica Davis (Newton, Kan.) and Kelsey Schrock (Wellman, Iowa) each recorded one shot.
“We were able to possess and pass the ball quite well. We were able to create several good opportunities that we couldn't finish,” coach Kurt Hostetler said. “Overall, I thought the girls played one of their best games of the season so far, we need to take advantage of the chances we get.”
The Larks travel to Could County Community College (Concordia, Kan.) on Saturday, Oct. 4, looking to improve their 0-9 record.
Hesston hosted the Kansas Wesleyan (Salina, Kan.) Coyotes on Friday evening, losing 11-0 against the high powered Coyote offense. The Larks gave up a goal less than five minutes in and never were able to catch up.
Freshman Kelsey Schrock (Wellman, IA) recorded the only shot for the Larks while they gave up 19 shots on goal. Freshman keeper Emily Toews (Whitewater, KS) saved 8 of the 19 for a save percentage of 42.1.
“We faced another good team tonight that was capable of a lot of offense,” said Head coach Kurt Hostetler.
Hesston travels to Great Bend to take on the Cougars on Monday, Sept. 28 still looking for their first win of the season.
The Johnson County Community College (Overland Park, Kan.) scored early and often on their way to a 17-0 win over Hesston College on Wednesday night, dropping the Larks to 0-6 on the year.
Janna Kauffman (Friedens, Pa.) recorded the lone shot-on-goal for Hesston.
“The girls battled hard but just were not a match for JCCC’s speed and athleticism,” said head coach Kurt Hostetler. “We’ll keep working and look to get back on track this Friday.”
The Larks welcome Kansas Wesleyan University JV (Salina, Kan.) to the Hesston campus on Friday night, September 26, for a home match beginning at 5:30 p.m.
