Stories of the Season |
Just a few minutes after a Dylan Simmons (Rose Hill, Kan.) penalty kick late in the second half tied things at 1-1 on Thursday night, the Allen County Community College (Iola, Kan.) Red Devils reclaimed the lead and held on for a 2-1 win over Hesston College.
“We did a good job of controlling the midfield for a large part of the game and didn't allow them to get off very many quality shots,” commented head coach Kurt Hostetler. “Unfortunately they got a lucky break and put in a second goal late in the half. I'm pleased with the effort the guys gave today. This was a close match that could have easily gone our way.”
Hesston hits the road for a fall break trip to Texas, where they will take on Ranger College (Ranger, Texas) on Saturday, October 17, at 3 p.m., and Western Texas College (Snyder, Texas) on the 18th, also starting at 3 p.m.
The Larks took on the Coffeyville Community College Red Raiders (Coffeyville, Kan.) on a frigid Tuesday night at home, losing 5-1. Coffeyville was able to capitalize on a few Hesston mistakes and take a 3-1 lead into the break.
“Tonight we came out to put a lot of pressure on Coffeyville. I felt that we did a decent job of doing so,” coach Kurt Hostetler said. “Even though being down two goals at half-time, I still felt that we were playing well enough to make a game out of it.”
Freshman Dylan Simmons (Rose Hill, Kan.) scored the Larks only goal of the game on an assist by sophomore Paul Schrag (Hesston, Kan.). Sophomore Dustin Linder (Louisville, Ohio) and freshman Brad Knispel (Sarasota Fla.) also recorded shots on goal for Hesston. Freshman keeper Reid O’Brien (Hays, Kan.) gave up 5 goals on 10 shots.
“The errors that we made is what caused us to lose tonight,” said Hostetler. “I felt that we beat ourselves, we made mistakes and they took advantage of that.”
The Larks face off against Allen County Community College in Iola, Kan., on Thursday Oct. 15 at 7:30.
Cowley County Community College (Arkansas City, Kan.) wasted little time setting the tone in Saturday’s league game at Hesston College, jumping all over the Larks with four first half goals on their way to a 5-1 win.
Hesston freshman Dylan Simmons (Rose Hill, Kan.) found the back of the net with less than four minutes to play to get the Larks on the board. Simmons finished with three shots-on-goal.
“A very slow start is what did us in,” commented head coach Kurt Hostetler. “We made several defensive errors early in the game and they were able to capitalize on them. We did better the second half, cleaned up our mistakes and finally netted one ourselves. We had several opportunities throughout the game but weren't able to place it around their keeper.”
The Larks welcome Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College to the Hesston campus on Tuesday, October 13, for a 7:30 p.m. match.
Hesston hosted Northeastern Oklahoma (NEO) A&M (Miami, Okla.) Thursday and picked up an important 5-0 win. The win should help the Larks get on track as the season winds down towards the playoffs.
“This was a much needed win to help get us out of the rut we've been in," said coach Kurt Hostetler. “Tonight the guys came out and played to win. It's great to be on this end of things. This season has been tough on us so far. We have the players to do well, we've just needed to play with more passion and be a scrappier team.”
The Larks were led by freshman Hussein Abtidon (Mogadisho, Somalia) who netted two goals. Sophomores Alex Steiner (Kidron, Ohio) and Paul Schrag (Hesston, Kan.) and freshman Logan Waite (Winfield, Kan.) each added a goal. Freshmen Dylan Simmons (Rose Hill, Kan.) and Brad Knispel (Sarasota, Fla.) each had two assists to lead the team in that category. Freshman keeper Reid O’Brien recorded his second collegiate shutout.
“I'm excited for the guys, they played well, they deserve this win, and it was great to have nearly everyone contribute in this victory,” said Hostetler. “I'm looking to carry this energy and momentum into this weekend’s match against Region VI opponent Cowley County.”
The Larks host Cowley County on Saturday, beginning at 7:30, and will look for back to back wins to continue their momentum.
The Hesston College men’s soccer team surrendered an early goal to host Cloud County Community College (Concordia, Kan.), the first of five unanswered tallies that left the Larks on the wrong end of a 5-0 decision on Saturday afternoon.
Masaki Kato (Tokyo, Japan) and Brad Knispel (Sarasota, Fla.) recorded the only shots-on-goal for Hesston on the day, while Cloud directed 14 shots to the net.
“This was a disappointing outing for our guys,” said Coach Kurt Hostetler. “We’re having trouble playing up to the speed and physical nature of our opponents.”
Hesston returns home to face Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (Miami, Okla.) on Thursday, October 8, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Hesston College hosted the #4 ranked Garden City (Kan.) Community College Broncbusters on Thursday, Oct 1, losing 5-0. The Broncbusters speed and offensive scheme was too much for the Larks.
The Larks were led by sophomore forward Alex Steiner (Kidron, Ohio) with a shot on goal and freshman midfielder Logan Waite (Winfield, Kan.) recording the teams only other shot. Lark keeper Reid O’Brien (Hays, Kan.) allowed five goals while saving 11 shots for a save percentage of 68.8%.
“I felt we played with more intensity tonight, but Garden City is a tough team. We were able to defend well for large parts of the game, but their speed and pressure is what hurt us,” said coach Kurt Hostetler. “We worked hard to win the ball, but didn't do a good job of maintaining possession of it once we got it.”
Hesston travels to Concordia on Saturday, Oct. 4, to take on the Cloud County Community College Thunderbirds. The Larks are hoping for their second win of the season as they head into the final stretch of the schedule.
The Larks hosted Kansas Wesleyan (Salina, Kan) on Friday, September 25, battling hard on the rain soaked field before ending in a 0-0 tie following overtime. The Larks played great defense and had 12 shots but weren’t able to capitalize and put one in the net.
Hesston was led by sophomore Alex Steiner’s (Kidron, OH) five shots including an exciting one on goal just as time expired in OT where he lobbed the goalie but left it just high. Sophomore Paul Schrag (Hesston, KS) added three shots and freshman Dylan Simmons (Rose Hill, KS) added two, one of which was on goal.
“I felt that we were able to play with more intensity tonight,” said Head Coach Kurt Hostetler. “We definitely created quality scoring opportunities that we should have finished.”
The Larks freshman goalie Reid O’Brien (Hays, KS) saved all six shots on goal en route to his first collegiate shutout.
“Tonight’s overtime periods helped bring out the fire that this team has, and hopefully that will continue.” Hostetler said. “If we play with this much energy every time out, we should be able to get some wins.”
The Larks travel to Great Bend, KS on Monday, Sept 28 to take on the Barton County Community College Cougars. Hesston is trying to improve to 2-6-1 on Monday at 4:00 pm.
After surrendering an early goal to Johnson County Community College (Overland Park, Kan.), the Hesston College men’s soccer team played even with Cavaliers throughout the rest of the first half and trailed 1-0 at the break. JC scored four times in the second half however, to break open the match and win 5-0.
Paul Schrag (Hesston, Kan.) recorded two of the three shots on goal for the Larks, while Andy Miller (Freeman, SD) notched the other.
Freshman keeper Reid O’Brien (Hays, Kan.) kept the Larks in the game early with several nice saves, finishing with 12 stops.
“We didn't play with much intensity in the first half, but Reid made a couple of good saves to keep us in it,” said head ocach Kurt Hostetler. “We picked up our intensity in the second half, which was good to see. I don't think the score accurately reflects the type of game that is was.“
Hesston, now 1-6 on the season, looks to win back in the win column with a home game versus Kansas Wesleyan University JV (Salina, Kan.) on Friday night, September 26, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
The Hesston College men’s soccer team lost a 2-1 match to regional rival Kansas City (Kan.) Community College on Thursday night, putting the Lark’s record at 1-4 on the season.
The two teams battled through most of the first half with no score before Hesston freshman Masaki Kato (Tokyo, Japan) capitalized on a scoring opportunity with one second left in the half with a beautiful volley that dropped neatly over the KCK keeper. The Larks were unable hold the lead however, as KCK tallied two second half goals to earn the victory.
“They had us on our heels early in the first half, but we dodged some bullets and made a few tactical adjustments which allowed us to maintain control in their half,” explained Hesston head coach Kurt Hostetler. “This opened up some opportunities for us and changed the momentum a bit. Unfortunately, throughout the second half we were not able to control the ball and allowed them to net the tying and go ahead goals. This hurts. It's our second game in two outings that we let the game slip away. This is a good team, we just need to get over this hump and finish out a game.”
The Hesston College men’s soccer team used a first-half goal by freshman Brad Knispel (Sarasota, Fla.) to grab a 1-0 lead in Saturday’s home match against Neosho County Community College (Chanute, Kan.), but the Larks weren’t able to hold on as the visitors scored twice in the second half and escaped with a 2-1 win.
Knispel’s goal, assisted off a corner kick from freshman Logan Waite (Winfield, Kan.), came with less than nine minutes to play in the first half and the Larks took the 1-0 lead into the break. Following the tying goal, Hesston had a chance to retake the lead but couldn’t convert on a penalty kick. A Neosho goal with under 10 minutes to play provided the difference.
“I felt we showed a strong effort tonight, but couldn’t finish when we had some opportunities,” said Coach Kurt Hostetler. “Neosho came at us fast to start the game and we did a nice job of sustaining their pressure and then creating our own chances. These guys have the ability to win some games, and we will get there.”
Keeper Reid O’Brien (Hays, Kan.) stopped seven of nine shots on goal in the loss.
On Thursday, September 17, the Larks welcome Kansas City (Kan.) Community College to the Hesston College campus for a 7:30 p.m. match.
The Hesston College men’s soccer team used two second-half goals in the last ten minutes of the match to put away Central Christian JV (McPherson, Kan.) 3-1, earning the Larks their first win of the young season.
Early in the first half, sophomore midfielder Alex Steiner (Kidron, Ohio) put Hesston on the board when he converted on a breakaway opportunity and snuck a shot under the Central keeper. Minutes later, Steiner nearly scored again but wasn’t able to convert.
Hesston maintained a 1-0 advantage into the break, but the visitors tied things up at one goal apiece 15 minutes into the second half.
With time winding down, the Larks kept the pressure up and eventually forward Paul Schrag (Hesston, Kan.) found the back of the net to put Hesston back in front. Schrag wasted little time finding the net again, as he made good on an assist from freshman Brad Knispel (Sarasota, Fla.) with under five minutes to play to give the home team a 3-1 lead. Knispel assisted on each of Hesston’s three goals.
“I felt the guys did a good job and battled hard most of the night,” said Coach Kurt Hostetler. “There were several moments that I think we lost our focus, but were able to regain our composure and net a few more. I felt like we created a lot of good scoring opportunities but weren’t able to capitalize on more of them. This was a good win for us, Central Christian played a tough match. It's good to get the first win under our belts.”
On the night, Hesston outshot Central 10-6. Larks freshman keeper Reid O’Brien (Hays, Kan.) saved five of six shots to earn his first collegiate win in the net.
The home win moves the Larks to 1-2 on the season, as they host Bethany JV on Tuesday, September 8, for a 7:30 pm matchup.
The Hesston College men’s soccer team opened the 2009 season with matches against Metropolitan Community College (MCC) – Maple Woods (Kansas City, Mo.) and MCC – Blue River (Independence, Mo.) over the weekend, losing both matches by scores of 2-0 and 7-3, respectively.
Versus Blue River, freshmen Brad Knispel (Sarasota, Fla.), Logan Waite (Winfield, Kan.), and Dylan Simmons (Rose Hill, Kan.) each recorded their first collegiate goal, while Waite, freshmen forward Masaki Kato (Tokyo, Japan), and sophomore midfielder Hans Hess (Goshen, Ind.) each tallied assists.
The Larks look to record their first win of the young season during their home opener against Central Christian College JV (McPherson, Kan.) on Thursday, September 3. The match is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
Seventeen first-year players combine with six returners
to give Coach Kurt Hostetler his deepest and perhaps most talented men’s
roster as a new season of Hesston College soccer approaches. Led by last
year’s leading scorer, midfielder Alex Steiner (Kidron, Ohio), the sophomore
class will be counted on to provide leadership and guidance to the freshmen.
Returners Dustin Linder (Louisville, Ohio), Calvin Graybill (Goshen,
Ind), and David Eigsti (Goshen, Ind), give Hesston three experienced
defenders, while midfielder Hans Hess (Goshen, Ind) will add depth to
their position. One sophomore to keep an eye on is forward Paul Schrag
(Hesston, Kan). After a late-season switch from defense to forward last
season, the local product flourished in his new role and is now a fixture
in the Larks’ offense.
As a whole, the freshmen class has impressed Hostetler and his staff with their cohesiveness and hard-work. Asked to name several new players who might have an early impact, Hostetler pointed out a few who have caught his eye.
“Brad Knispel (Sarasota, Fla.) has looked great, good foot work, composure, he looks like he’ll be an important part of this team,” commented Hostetler. “Dylan Simmons (Rose Hill, Kan.) is another newcomer who has great ball control and speed. It’s difficult to name just a few, the entire class has been impressive, Logan Waite (Winfield, Kan.) and Elliott Wilder (Hesston, Kan.) have also looked good and will add size and speed.”
Hostetler immediately listed depth and team speed as attributes he is excited about.
“The intensity level is great,” Hostetler continued. “Everyone is focused and on the same page--we’ll be ready to go.”
The 2009 schedule includes a fall break trip (Oct. 17, 18) to western Texas, where the Larks will play Ranger (Texas) College and Western Texas College (Snyder). A September 25 matchup versus Kansas Wesleyan (Salina, Kan.) during homecoming weekend is another noteworthy game for the Larks.
Hesston opens the 2009 season August 29 at Maple Woods Community College (Kansas City, Mo.)
