Dormitory Supplies

There are many things you will need to make your dormitory comfortable while you are on campus. Some things are best to bring from home. Others are easier to buy here so they won’t take up space in your luggage. There will be several shopping trips in the first weeks on campus. Here is our recommendation of what to bring with you.

What to bring from home:

Decorations

You may bring posters, cloth wall hangings, photos, letters from your family and friends and small table decorations to help bring a bit of “home” into your dorm room.

Transferable Food

Transferable food that would be difficult to find in Kansas: loose tea or tea bags, coffee, broth mixes, herbal remedies (such as ginger), special medication

Universal Adapters

Plug type A is the plug which has two flat parallel pins, and plug type B is the plug which has two flat parallel pins and a grounding pin. USA operates on a 120V supply voltage and 60Hz.

Attire

Traditional attire and things to represent your culture: Please bring at least one outfit of traditional clothing from your country. This can be a school uniform, if that’s traditional where you live. Consider bringing local gifts or trinkets to share or photographs of your family and city.

Cell Phones

Some students connect the phones they bring from home to the campus Wi-Fi and do not use cell service in the U.S. Others buy a sim card and service plan to use with their phones from home. Monthly plans start at about $35 with unlimited phone calls and text. You can purchase a sim card at nearby stores after your arrival. The campus has Wi-Fi, so you won’t use much high-speed data.

Buy here after you arrive:

Decorations

You can also buy these things here, especially if you enjoy stuffed animals, sports gear or U.S. musical groups.

Bedding

All campus beds are Extra Long Twin size. We will provide you with one set of linens (two sheets and one pillowcase), one pillow and a blanket. You may want to buy more sheet sets, a winter comforter and a bedspread when you arrive.

Medication

Only bring prescribed medication. Aspirin/Tylenol, allergy pills and other common medicines can be bought here.

Personal Hygiene

Bring a travel size of body wash, deodorant, lotion, shampoo/conditioner and a bathrobe for your first few nights in America. We will initially provide towels, washcloths and bed sheets. You will need to purchase a shower caddie, laundry detergent, laundry basket and additional blankets for your room. The towels and bedding we provide will be charged to your student account if they are not returned within the first month.
