After their match against Southwestern College was rained out on Tuesday, the Hesston College tennis team traveled to Sterling College Wednesday, March 28, to play. Both the men’s and women’s teams were victorious. The men defeated the Warriors 8-1 and the women picked up the 5-4 win.
The men got off to a strong start in doubles, taking all three matches. Doubles teams 2 (Flores and Tani) and 3 (Kauffman and Oesch) dominated winning 8-3 and 8-2. In the individual matches, Nadeem Jaber (1), Hermes Flores (3), Shoma Tani (4), Jeff Kauffman (5) and Curtis Oesch were all victorious. Shoma Tani did not even allow his opponent to win a game, winning 8-0.
On the women’s side, the Larks took a 2-1 advantage into the singles matches. Doubles teams of Harme Suzuki and Cameron Bracknell (2) and Ama Zehr and Kaede Nakada (3) won, giving Hesston College confidence for the day. In both the top and the bottom of the singles pairings Hesston took home the victories. Lily Wait (1), Kaede Nakata (5) and Ama Zehr (6) picked up the wins to allow for women’s tennis to earn their first team victory of the year.
“It was an incredible day,” said interim Head Coach Michael Oyer. “We have been working so hard on our doubles game in practice and we came out taking all three men&squo;s matches and 2 of 3 women’s matches.” This is the first time both the men and women have won on the same day in over two years. “I am so proud of the way these players fought through adversity to get better each day,” said Oyer.
The Larks will compete again on Wednesday, April 10 at Crowley County Community College.
