Larks top Falcons

After a tumultuous start to the season, interim Head Coach Michael Oyer and the Hesston College men’s tennis team got their first win last week. The Larks headed down to Wichita to take on Friends University and won the match 8-1.

With Friends University only having five men, Hesston started the match up 2-0 without playing a match. Hermes Flores and Shoma Tani played their best match of the season to push the lead to 3-0, winning the #2 doubles match 8-2. Nadeem Jaber and Garrett Roth played a back and forth match at number one doubles but came up short as Friends won the tight match 9-8 (7-4).

As singles started, the Larks only needed two wins from the remaining five singles matches. #1-4 matches started and Shoma Tani (#4) finished first followed by the #1 Nadeem Jaber wrapping up the team victory. Garret Roth competed against high school teammate Isaac Penner to win #2 and Hermes Flores (#3) and Curtis Oesch (#5) also picked up victories.

“This was our fourth match in five days,” said Oyer. “We battled in each one. I could see us getting better and closer to victory in each match we played. It finally paid off in a big way. Today everyone fought through those times of adversity and had the mental toughness to finish points, games and them matches”

The Larks (1-6) will be back on the court at Southwestern College (Winfield) on Tuesday, March 27.
