The Hesston College women’s basketball team lost 74-62 to the visiting Brown Mackie College (Salina, Kan.) Lions in their final trip to Hesston. BMC has announced the institution will be closing its doors at the end of the school year. The Larks started out brightly, opening the game up 7-2. The Lions then rattled off their own 19-2 run to take a 21-9 lead after the first quarter. Hesston picked up their scoring in the second quarter but still trailed by a dozen at the half as Brown Mackie led 41-29.
Things went back and fourth in the third quarter and the Larks still found themselves down 12 points after the third, 55-43. Hesston cut the lead to seven (70-63) with a few minutes remaining, but the Larks weren’t able to inch closer. Freshman point guard Connor Atkinson (Hutchinson, Kan.) scored a game high 24 points in the loss. Freshman guard Whitney Green (Texarkana, Ark) added 10.
Head Coach Jeff Jacobs sees room for improvement “I’m very disappointed with our effort. We don’t resemble the team I see in practice. I was happy with Haley [Unruh, freshman forward].” Unruh (Coldwater, Kan.), a middle hitter on the volleyball team playing in her first collegiate game, was active around the hoop scoring six points. The loss drops the Larks to 7-14 overall, as they look to snap their seven game losing streak.
Next up – Hesston College women’s basketball will travel to Kansas City, Kansas, on February 8. The Larks will take on the Blue Devils from Kansas City Kansas Community College. Hesston fell 78-44 last month. Tipoff from KCKCC Fieldhouse will be at 5:30 p.m.
