The Hesston College Larks volleyball team defeated the visiting Labette Community College cardinals in three sets, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20.
The Larks came out strong in the first set, opening up a five point lead early. Labette CC made a rally midway through the first set as they trailed 13-9, only to fall 25-19. After taking the first set, Hesston came out on fire leading 10-5 forcing the Cardinals to call a timeout. The second set saw an even 18-18 score late, as the Larks scored seven of the next 11 points to win a competitive set 25-22; and take a comfortable 2-0 lead in the match.
Looking to avoid the sweep, the Cardinals went up 9-5 forcing a Larks timeout. Hesston rattled off five points in a row to retake the lead at 10-9 and never looked back, taking the final set 25-22. Sophomore Kortney Cunningham (Almena, Kan.) led the blocking effort for the Larks and had two of the team’s five aces. Sophomore Jessanna Nebel (Hesston, Kan.) had 26 assists while freshman Alicen Meysing (Hesston, Kan.) had eight kills in the winning effort. With the win, the Larks even their season record at 10-10.
Volleyball will have a week off before hosting their next match, Wednesday October 12 at 6:30 p.m. vs. the Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College Greyhounds.
