Riding momentum from Saturday’s 6-0 weekend sweep of Clarendon College and Pratt CC, wasn’t quite enough to carry the Hesston College Volleyball team over Coffeyville CC on Wednesday. The Larks fell to the Ravens 0-3.
Coffeyville opened the match on a 9-4 run and didn’t look back. The Larks traded points throughout the first set but weren’t able to match the tough Ravens, falling 16-25.
Hesston College showed more of a spark in the second set eventually bringing the exciting match even at 18-18. The Larks sprang ahead 22-20 forcing Coffeyville to call a time out. The Ravens went on a 5-0 run to win the second set 25-22 for a commanding lead.
Coffeyville started out strong in the third set, leading 10-5, heading to a later lead of 20-14. The Larks began a furious rally but fell just short 23-25. “We did a lot of good things tonight and played with heart. We just needed to take advantage of our momentum and not let them sneak back in it,” said Head Coach DeeDee Landes following the match.
Sophomore Kortney Cunningham (Almena, Kan.) finished with nine kills on the night while freshmen Haley Unruh (Coldwater, Kan.), Sierrah Long (Highland, Calif.) and Alicen Meysing (Goessel, Kan.) all finished with eight kills. Sophomore Jessanna Nebel (Hesston, Kan.) led the way with 23 assists.
The loss drops the Larks to 8-9 on the season. Volleyball will return for two more home matches on Saturday Oct. 1 hosting Friends University JV at 10 a.m. and Barton Community College at 2 p.m.
