The Hesston College men’s soccer team used a first-half goal by freshman Brad Knispel (Sarasota, Fla.) to grab a 1-0 lead in Saturday’s home match against Neosho County Community College (Chanute, Kan.), but the Larks weren’t able to hold on as the visitors scored twice in the second half and escaped with a 2-1 win.
Knispel’s goal, assisted off a corner kick from freshman Logan Waite (Winfield, Kan.), came with less than nine minutes to play in the first half and the Larks took the 1-0 lead into the break. Following the tying goal, Hesston had a chance to retake the lead but couldn’t convert on a penalty kick. A Neosho goal with under 10 minutes to play provided the difference.
“I felt we showed a strong effort tonight, but couldn’t finish when we had some opportunities,” said Coach Kurt Hostetler. “Neosho came at us fast to start the game and we did a nice job of sustaining their pressure and then creating our own chances. These guys have the ability to win some games, and we will get there.”
Keeper Reid O’Brien (Hays, Kan.) stopped seven of nine shots on goal in the loss.
On Thursday, September 17, the Larks welcome Kansas City (Kan.) Community College to the Hesston College campus for a 7:30 p.m. match.
