Coach Nussbaum's Comments
On a day when the Hesston eleven could have pitched in the towel for the season, they circled the wagons and virtually won the final half of play for the season. Although the second half score was 1-1, the Larks dramatically turned a 2-0 snoozer into a nail biter for the host Red Devils. After falling behind in the first half on some lackluster play, the team came out firing in the second half and immediately seized control of the emotional aspect of the game with hard, physical, but clean play.
Allen County responded by bickering amongst themselves and resorting to foul play. Hesston played through the taunting and badgering and struck for their first goal in the regular run of play this season. Andy Hoffman started the play with a well timed interception and immediate through ball to a stampeding Ogi Marjonivic. Marjonovic then played the ball on his first touch across the goal mouth that beat the goalkeeper to an onrushing Yusuke Oki. Oki then tucked the ball in the right side of the cage with pressure on his back.
The ensuing celebration was unfortunately short lived. Allen Co. struck back within 10 minutes but the team walking off with class at the final whistle wore maroon. The team displayed drive and unwillingness to quit the entire season, and as it played out, until the final seconds.
Many teams would have quit on themselves before the midpoint of the season under similar circumstances but our team displayed the true meaning of competition and sportsmanship. A tip of the cap to the 2000 men's soccer team on a distasteful job well done. You can be proud in what you do.
