Coach's Comments--
Hesston gets back into action after fall break against Rhema Bible College with a rare afternoon home game. I was really worried that the break would affect our play. We had practice on Tuesday and Wednesday but for different reasons not everyone could be there. Hesston did appear a bit off as Rhema got on the board with 16 minutes left in the first half. Hesston seemed to have trouble in every aspect of the game as they had trouble passing the ball, clearing the ball, and containing on defense. It was clear from the start that we were just off. We just couldn’t execute even simple things. It was really frustrating to watch.
Rhema got its first goal with 16 minutes left in the first half when Hesston turned the ball over deep in its own end and then failed to clear the ball when they had the chance. We were making lots of silly mistakes and it finally caught up with us when they scored that first goal.
The second half started off much the same as the first half ended. Rhema got its second goal 25 minutes into the second half. Just another case where we for some reason could not clear the ball out the box. Really we gave them twoeasy goals. If a team is going to score on you at least make them work for it. We didn’t make them work for their goals.
Hesston’s fortune looked as if it might turn around. Andy Krabill took a nice through ball and had a nice breakaway on goal but managed to only put the shot right at the Rhema keeper. The Larks just couldn’t find the back of the net and chalked up another scoreless loss. After their second goal the guys finally started to get their touch back. We had many opportunities on goal but just didn’t put many shots on goal let alone in the goal. We had so many shots go sailing over the goal. We really didn’t test out their keeper. We made his job easy because we couldn’t keep the ball down. We played fairly well for about the last 24 minutes but, of course, that’s just not going to get the job done.
It’s disappointing that we played so poorly. Rhema isn’t a bad team but they are a team that really we should beat. I think the break had a lot to do with it. I also blame myself. I didn’t do a very good job getting them prepared for this game after our break. When the whole team is having problems I as their coach have to take much of the responsibility. The brightest spot for us was the play on Danny Yoder in goal. Danny made two or three spectacular saves. If not for his great play the game would have been a much bigger loss.
The Larks don’t get much time to mull over the loss, as their next game will be tomorrow October 18th at 3 p.m. against Haskell Indian Nations University at home.
