Coach's Summary:
Hesston College comes off a strong three game win streak to
take on Barclay College in Haviland, Kansas. "We played some good
soccer last week but that was at home. My big concern is that since
this was not a regional game and would not mean as much that we would
have a let down. Some of the guys are still sore and it looks like we
will not be able to play Greg Hostetler, which hurts. Greg is a big
part of our defensive structure in the back. His play is part of what
has made us so strong. But we will play Ryan Wingard in his place and
I am sure that Ryan will do a great job. Ryan just does not have as
much experience playing in the back as Greg but he is learning quickly."
The Larks looked sluggish the opening
kick off. A dangerous cross by Barclay caromed off the crossbar and
put a little fear into the Larks. But it seemed to be just what Hesston
would need to wake up. The Larks moved the ball well and quickly sliced
through the Barclay defense. But it was not until the fifteenth minute
that Hesston found the back of the net. Brett Brand's nice pass from
the end line to Felipe Tafur looked like a goal but instead caromed
off the post directly to Jared Widmer who finished off the play to put
Hesston up 1-0.
Brett Brand found the back of the net
next for the Larks off a nice cross by Michael Armstrong. The Larks
were now finding more and more space through the midfield. Hesston attacked
consistently now. Brandon Davis was the next one to ripple the twine.
Curtis Yoder cut the ball back on the right corner of the field. A nice
pass to Brandon Davis at the top of the box gave Davis the time to rip
a nice shot past a sprawling Michael Haffner.
But the half was not over. Eric Bixler
sent in a dangerous corner kick that Haffner was able to deflect out
but not away as Curtis Yoder's head ball beat Haffner over the top.
The second half was a little different half than the first. Although
Hesston still dominated possession, they chose to control the ball more
instead of playing so direct. Moving the ball in and out the Larks looked
more patient. Barclay playing much stronger defensively now found less
opportunity to create their own attack. Thus, the Larks found lots of
chances but did not find the net again until the fifty-fifth minute.
Philip Kauffman drilled a precision cross to a waiting Alan Peachey
who redirected the ball into the side netting.
Barclay did well in goal and on defense
not to allow another finish until the seventy-seventh minute. This time
patience was not called for. Instead Jordan Mast threaded a perfect
pass diagonally from the right side behind the defense centrally to
a streaking Alan Peachey. Peachey ran through and neatly slotted the
ball past Haffner for the final tally of the afternoon.
"The first half we were attacking quickly
and playing more direct. The second half we actually passed the ball
around very nicely. Had we finished better in the second half we could
have scored more, but more goals are important. What is important is
that we play well. I really liked how we were not trying to force any
bad passes in the second half. Barclay is not as strong as our regional
opponents. That is no secret but they are much improved over last year.
In fact, they have really improved every year that we have played them.
The problem for them is that we are improving each year as well."
The Larks hit the road again on Saturday
against Region VI opponent Cloud County Community College in Concordia,
Kansas at 3:00pm. (Note: the games against Mid America Christian
University including this Thursday's match up and the game scheduled
for Oct 14 have been cancelled do to scheduling errors. The games will
not count for or against the Larks record and are being called no contests.)
