Coach's Comments--
Hesston biggest test of the season ended with an unfavorable result but still has Hesston headed in the right direction. Some might think that a 2-0 defeat is a step back from the two previous victories, but the quality of play from our opponent this time was a step up from Haskell and Barclay. So a 2-0 result isn’t anything to be ashamed of. Bethel has been producing quality teams ever since Gerry Seiber took over as coach nearly 10 years ago and this team seems to be no exception. The pace of the game was the biggest difference. Bethel moved the ball much more quickly on the attack and pressured the ball much more aggressively on defense than our two previous opponents.
Bethel had many more opportunities on goal than HC but not all of them were dangerous. Hesston got a slow tart and had trouble connecting on passes to begin the game but managed to keep Bethel at bay until about mid way through the first half. BC was awarded a free kick just outside of HC’s penalty area. Nick Mackey sent a nicely struck free kick up and over the wall and bending just below the bar and out of the reach of HC’s Kyle Beun.
Bethel continued to have the better play for the most part but Hesston still managed to create some nice attacks of its own. However, Hesston just couldn’t find the back of the net. Late into the second half BC managed another goal after a defensive miscue in the back led to a Bethel 2 on 1 breakaway which Nick Mackey finished off.
Hesston never did give up as they continued to battle to the final whistle. With time running down Hesston had its best opportunity to score. Some nice passing in the final 1/3 of the field on the right side led to a scramble in the box, which BC was very fortunate to clear out. The guys were obviously disappointed n the result but the knowledge of being able to compete with a four year college the caliber of Bethel and knowing that we are capable of playing so much better offered some solace. This game was still a step in the right direction as we continue to improve and prepare for the upcoming regional games next week when the results will really matter. Our next match will be Tuesday September 10 at Bethany College to play their JV squad. Hesston will open its regional play at Neosho County ommunity College on the 12th at 3 p.m. before facing perennial powerhouse Johnson County Community College (ranked #10 in the country) on Saturday the 14th at 2 p.m.
