Coach's Comments--
Hesston has another dominant performance to bring their record to 2-0. Barclay possessed a stronger defense than Hesston’s last opponent but it still didn’t take long for Hesston to register their first goal, four minutes to be exact. Barclay managed to push the ball deep into Hesston territory but in the process managed to expose itself in the back. Kyle Beun collected a weak cross and immediately put HC on the breakaway with a strong accurate punt up to Andy Krabil who collected the ball and blasted a shot past the BC goalkeeper. HC’s second goal began with a nice free kick 40 yards out from Craig Mast, and ended with Jared Coblentz slicing his way through the defense to head the ball in the back of the net (very nice indeed). HC’s next two goals were both scored by nice through balls from Heli Chambi to Craig Mast and Jared Coblentz. Hesston registered three more goals before time expired (one an own goal by BC which was credited to Jared Coblentz). For the second straight game Jared Coblentz tallied a hat trick.
Fans may be impressed with the offense and they should be but the story of the day was really the defense. Barclay was credited with only two shots on goal but that may have been generous as BC never mounted and dangerous attacks. Even when BC did manage to string together some passes to penetrate deep into Hesston end of the field their efforts were quickly squashed by our strong defense (led by Nathan Wood) and or by our goalkeeper Kyle Beun.
We were clearly the dominant team from start to finish. At times we had lapses of concentration as can happen with a lopsided game but overall I’m pleased with the way our team is playing. I’ve seen good improvement every day since the first day of practice and we will just try to continue that pattern.
We will have a big test this next coming Friday when we have our first home game against Bethel College (the game is at 7:30 p.m.). I expect Bethel to be much much stronger than the two previous teams that we’ve played. It will be a good test for our team. I know Bethel coach, Gerry Seiber, very well and have a lot of respect for him. He was my coach when I played at Hesston College and remains a good friend of mine. I know that his team will be strong and ready to play in spite of it being their first contest of the season. If we can compete with Bethel we’ll be able to compete with any team we face this season.
