Coach's Comments--
A good start to the season as Hesston College dominates Haskell University. HC entered its first game already depleted with injuries. With only two available substitutes HC still had the advantage as HINU only had 11 players on the roster. From the opening kickoff it was clear that Hesston was the dominant team. HC shelled a barrage of shots on goal within the first few minutes, but came up empty with shots going high, wide, at the keeper, and ringing off the crossbar. But it didn’t take too long as HC capitalized on a keeper mistake as Heli Chambi put in the first goal of the season.
Hesston continued to pound shots at the HINU goal and found the net 5 more times before HINU’s Travis Crowpost slipped a nice shot past a sprawling Kyle Beun. HINU’s goal came off a defensive miscue in the back that allowed Crowpost to charge free on a breakaway.
Hesston’s nicest goal of the day was the sixth goal. Mark Yoder stole the ball from an HINU forward and started the attack from deep in the defensive corner of the field. Hesston worked the ball through eight players and over 110 yards untouched by HINU to end with Justin Weaver banging the ball past the HINU keeper. Pure poetry is how I describe the goal. It’s the type of goal that you’d like to give out seven assists.
Overall we played fairly well for our first game. With only 17 players on the roster we never get to practice 11 v 11 so it was good to see what glaring needs we have. We put together some great plays but the players know that we still have some work to do. Our next test will be Saturday at Barclay College at 4 p.m.
