Five Hesston College baseball players have received All-Region VI honors in Division II, National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
Sophomore pitcher Brad Rohaty, The Villages, Fla., with a 3-3 record and an outstanding earned run average of 2.04, received the honor for the second time.
"Brad was the ace of our staff and was consistently tough every time he started, especially down the stretch," said Larks coach Art Mullet.
Sophomore pitcher/first baseman Drew Cole, Mulvane, Kan., also received the honor. Cole batted .320, and his pitching record was 2-3 with an earned run average of 4.69.
"Defensively, Drew was outstanding at first base," Mullet said, "making only two errors in 144 chances."
The third sophomore named to the All-Region VI team was outfielder Richie Idler, Bridgeville, Del. "Richie has made tremendous improvement in his two years here, batting .256 and playing outstanding defense in centerfield," said Mullet.
Making the elite squad as freshman were infielder Daniel Martin, Harrisonburg, Va., and Jason Wohlford, Mulvane, Kan. Martin, a middle infielder, led the team in hitting at .382, while Wohlford, an outfielder, batted .324. "Daniel started the season slowly," Mullet said, "but as he adjusted to college pitching, came on very strong in the second half of the season. Jason was hindered by injury in the last several weeks of the season, and missed much of the playoffs, but has shown excellent offensive potential here."
The Larks finished with a 12-23 record, after beating Brown Mackie College (Salina, Kan.) three games to one in the best-of-five Region VI play-off, then dropped two Southwest District contests, one to Redlands Community College (El Reno, Okla.) 4-2, and the other to Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College 8-0, ranked #7 in Division II of the NJCAA.
