The Hesston College baseball team will host and compete in the district
playoffs in Division II of the National Junior College Athletic Association
May 18-20 at Oswald Field on the Hesston campus.
The Larks qualified for the districts by defeating Brown Mackie College, Salina,
Kan., at Oswald Field by a 6-2 score Tuesday, May 9, thus winning the Region
VI best of five series 3-games to 2. The win gave the Larks a season record of
19-23.
Coach Art Mullet said it was gratifying to win the regional, after a four-year
hiatus. "I've felt all along that this team had what it takes to have a
very good year, but have had trouble convincing them how good they could be," he
said. "Our defense has been our strength all season, and we've pitched and
hit well at times. It will take all phases of our game clicking at the same time
in order for us to succeed in the districts."
Three teams will participate in the districts, with Hesston taking on the Oklahoma
regional winner at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 18. Hesston then plays Mesa (Ariz.)
Community College at 4 p.m. Mullet said six teams are competing in the Oklahoma
regional this weekend.
The Larks last won the regionals in 2002, and played in the districts at Enid,
Okla. In those district playoffs, Hesston defeated Phoenix (Ariz.) College in
the opener, then lost twice to Northern Oklahoma-Enid.
