Faculty members from the science and computer departments at Hesston College will host its fourth annual science and computer camp for high school homeschooled students May 12-16.
The laboratory camp for graduating 8th graders through graduating high school seniors will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.
At the camp, Hesston College faculty members will provide lab experiences for homeschooled students in the college's science and computer laboratories. Parents are invited to participate in the experience along with the students.
Last May, 41 students and 25 parents participated in the five-day experience. The students came from the Kansas towns/cities of Hesston, Newton, Canton, Wichita, McPherson, Marion, Clearwater, Solomon, Salina, Durham, and St. John, along with students from Bartlesville and Broken Arrow, Okla., and Arlington, Texas.
One student had attended all three homeschool camps hosted by the college. "We have so much fun and I learned so much," she said, "even though science is not my favorite subject. It's also been a real pleasure working with the college faculty. They love what they do and are fun to work with."
This year, brochures have been sent to past participants, and to homeschool students who have expressed interest in Hesston College. The brochures have also been made available at homeschool programs.
"We've been impressed with the quality of our homeschooled students and are looking at ways to attract more to our campus,” said Joel Kauffman, vice president of Admissions and Financial Aid Services. “We currently have 11 college students enrolled at Hesston College who come from the homeschool environment."
