Coach Mullet has been coaching baseball at various levels since 1967.
He graduated from Hiland High School, Berlin, Ohio, in 1963; from Goshen
College (Indiana) in 1967; and achieved a Master's degree from James
Madison University (Virginia) in 1972. He has coached at the high school
level for six years, and the college level for more than 30 years, including
Hesston College since 1980. He initiated the baseball program at Eastern
Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, in 1968.
Mullet's playing career included
two years at Goshen College, before signing professionally with the
Pittsburgh Pirates, where he played four seasons in the Pirate minor league
system, first as a shortstop, and then converted to pitching. Following
this experience, he first played, and then managed, the Harrisonburg
Turks of the Shenandoah Valley League for six years.
Mullet's teams at Hesston have participated
in the National Little College Athletic Association Championships four
times. His 1992 team, with a record of 24-11, finished second in the
nation. His 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2006, and 2007 teams won the National Junior
College Association D-II Regional Championships. The 2002 team was just
one win away from qualifying for the national tournament. Last year's team won its regionals.
Coach Mullet's coaching philosophy
is "to work harder than our opponents at doing the "little things" correctly.
Teaching the proper mechanics and stressing repetition and yet maintaining
a fun environment is always my goal. I want my players to enjoy their
baseball experience here, and be prepared for the next step beyond Hesston.
