Thursday, March 21

1:30 p.m. – Session-“Kinship Concealed” BSC Sauder Rooms
Sharon Cranford and Dwight Roth, former faculty
Kinship Concealed: Amish Mennonites and African American Connections, a semi-autobiographic novel based in historical facts and imaginative history, is to be released this April. Cranford, an African-American, and Roth, a Swiss German, will talk about their common ancestry which traces back to two Amish brothers, John and Jacob Mast, immigrants to colonial Pennsylvania in 1750. Jacob stayed in Pennsylvania and became the first Amish bishop ordained in the United States. John moved to North Carolina and became a Methodist whose descendants became slave owners, eventually resulting in Roth’s relatives owning Cranford’s ancestors as slaves.
