Hesston College

Undecided

a student

Are you interested in so many things that you don’t know which major to choose in college? Would you like to learn more about yourself and the careers and programs of study that might fit you? If so, Hesston College is the place for you! You will find yourself in good company here. One fourth of the new students at Hesston each year do not declare a major. Many others who indicate a major are still testing their interests as well.

Delaying the decision about a career and a college major is often a good thing to do. In reality, most college students change their major two or three times. By choosing to start out "undeclared" you place yourself in a position to gain the broad education that is essential for good leaders and that is valued by many employers. And you keep the door open for all kinds of possibilities.

What does Hesston offer?
Hesston College will work with you in an intentional way to help you sort through the many options that are available. In the end, of course, the decision is yours. But here is what Hesston can provide for you:

  • Careful advising by instructors who are generalists themselves, persons who remember what it was like to be faced with career choices and who are well-informed about the options available to you. During the first year these conversations focus on exploring your career and educational interests. During the second year you begin to consider your next steps after Hesston College such as employment, service, or transfer to another school.
  • Regular general education courses that will meet the A.A. requirements at Hesston and will prepare you to transfer into a variety of programs at four-year colleges and universities.
  • A flexible plan of study that allows you to take introductory courses in a variety of fields of study. If you find something you like, you can easily shift into that field as a major.
  • Specific experiences that help you identify your interests and possible career paths. These include a career exploration course, personal inventory and self-discovery tools, options to explore careers through independent studies, and opportunities to gain job experience through cooperative education.

In addition, you will find at Hesston College a campus climate that encourages exploration. Here you will rub shoulders with students from all over the world, students studying a wide variety of subjects. In casual conversations you will become aware of fields of study that might appeal to you. Representatives from a number of four-year colleges and from various church and service agencies visit campus regularly. Dorm life, chapel, campus employment, activities, and special events - all of these contribute to your understanding of who you are and who you want to become.
