Joel Miiler
Sophomore, Physics/Engineering
Kalona, Iowa

What drew you to Hesston College?
I came to Hesston because it was a small school. I didn’t attend a large high school so it was nice not to be overwhelmed by size. In addition, it is a nice campus and the ability to know everyone one campus is great.

What attracts you to Engineering and Physics?
I am interested in the engineering field because of the math and science involved. I like to work with numbers and figure out problems. I like knowing that the answer is either wrong or right.

How challenging are the academics in the Science/Physics program?
The programs offered here are challenging and make you think about what is actually going on. They are real life problems and solving them helps you solve other problems in life as well. You can develop excellent problem solving skills.

What is your favorite science course? Why is it your favorite?
My favorite science course was physics. It was because you find out a lot how the world works. You discover how things work that you use everyday and normally don’t think about what is actually going on inside them. I also got the chance to do research on a topic of choice (Audio Speakers and Relations to Physics, Construction and Physics)and figure out even in more detail how it works. Finally, there is just a lot of information that helps you understand how things work in the world.

Did you find opportunities for learning experiences outside the classroom?
There were some opportunities outside the classroom to apply what you learned in class. For example when we learned about circuits in Physics I could explain to people how their electronics worked. Plus it is just helpful for a person to know more about the world in general. You never know when you might run into something where science can explain what is happening. There are also chances to just get together with other classmates and do the homework.

What are the professors like in the department?
The professors are great teachers. They are available for help just about whenever you need it. They take the time to explain ideas clearly. They provide demonstration sometimes, which are helpful. They care about teaching you.

What are some of your most memorable moments as a student at Hesston?
Some of my most memorable moments are discussing issues in the world with friends in the dorm late at night. That really helps build relationships and helps you figure out your own positions. It is always helpful to hear another side to an issue in the world. Another moment was making up a game with some guys while waiting for the donut shop to open. Hesston will always be a memorable place. You never know when you will do something that you will never forget.

What are your plans for after Hesston?
My plans for after Hesston are to get a degree in Math/Physics. I will either go on and get that right away and then work or work construction as an apprentice and later get the degree. I have not figured that out yet. Hesston though has prepared me well enough that I feel comfortable with either decision.
