What drew you to Hesston College and the music program?
Coming to Hesston College was like stepping out of a box and leaping into a new world. Truthfully, college was not something I had initially given much consideration... and the thought of leaving the west coast seemed like a big transition. The size of my high school graduating class was equivalent to the entire student body at Hesston. So you could say I was hesitant to join this small Midwest town. However, with my growing passion to travel and urge to explore, I viewed it as an opportunity to use my wings. With support from my parents, a music scholarship, and an opportunity to live away from home, I was encouraged to set foot on this small liberal arts Mennonite college campus. I anticipated the experience of a collaborative community with a diverse student population from every region of the country as well as other countries. Almost immediately, I found myself immersed in the music program. The music profs are personable and eager to help me grow. I believe the music department at Hesston College has done a fantastic job in preparing me to make a greater contribution to the world around me.
How challenging are the academics in the music department?
I find the music courses here at Hesston challenging and stimulating. The professors have a wide range of experience, expertise, and enthusiasm that I appreciate. They are very supportive of my individual pursuits and interests. There always seems to be many opportunities for musical pursuit. In the academic music courses, the professors challenge us to be critical thinkers as well as encourage us to express ourselves.
What is your favorite music course? Why is it your favorite?
Well I’m not convinced I would ever be able to come up with a definitive answer. During my time at Hesston, I have enjoyed taking music appreciation, music theory classes, and private piano. I also participate in Wind Ensemble (AKA ‘Screaming Larks Pep Band’)! Now that’s a mouthful. Most music students are a part of two if not more ensembles in addition to other extracurricular possibilities! If I were unable to take one of these courses, it would put a dent in my enthusiasm. I extend my sincere sympathy to Ken Rodgers for allowing me to express myself both musically and verbally during all those wonderful piano sessions.
What are the professors like in this program? Do you connect with them beyond your times in class?
Sure we do! The instructors are in-touch with the students. I would feel comfortable inviting them with me on my daily exercise routine. It is reassuring to know that each of our music profs clearly has a deep passion and expertise in music. Because of the nature of Hesston’s intimate community, the professors are easily accessible. I have a high level of respect for our music personnel, because of how dedicated they are.
What have been your best or favorite performance opportunities at Hesston?
Since being a student at Hesston, I have had the pleasure of accompanying the Bel Canto Singers with piano on various occasions, performing dinner music recitals, and playing string bass in the orchestra pit for the opera Amahl and the Night Visitors (HC’s last Thanksgiving weekend production).
Did you find other opportunities for learning outside the classroom?
I have enjoyed the opportunity to participate as an instrumentalist in worship services. Other opportunities include providing music at the community center and participating in local bands. My peers have also contributed to my growth. This has been a warm, welcoming, nurturing environment and I have made many new friends. They have helped me develop my sense of self and who I want to become.
What are some of your most memorable moments as a student at Hesston?
I think that some of the most memorable moments are the ones where I have een able to connect with a group of individuals during times spent off campus. This includes attending concerts at Bethel College, “half-off appetizers nights” spent at Applebee’s, hanging out at Guitar Center in Wichita, and watching the Zamboni ice machine go around and around at Wichita Thunder hockey games. One of my favorite experiences was connecting with a couple of college students to take a trip to St. Louis over fall break. But I have also enjoyed alone time, such as the moments spent in the practice rooms or going on frequent runs at the Dyck Arboretum. A relaxing evening at the spa with a few friends is also a good time.
What are your plans for after Hesston?
Plans after Hesston are indefinite. I may transfer to one of Oregon’s state universities and focus in on a career path. The future yields additional opportunities for musical performance. I look forward to participating in local bands, continuing to perform in local coffee shops, as well as tutoring middle and high school string students. There’s plenty to look forward to! As for now, I plan to soak up all the fun and engaging activities the college has to offer. The time I have spent here so far has zipped by quickly. It won’t be long before I’ll be looking back on this moment in my life.
