Business - Student Profile - Yuanita Santoso

Yuanita SantosoYuanita Santoso
Sophomore, Business/Accounting
Semarang, Indonesia

What drew you to Hesston College?
First, some of my Indonesian friends came to Hesston College earlier. I heard about Hesston from them. I also learned about Hesston at my church, a Mennonite church in Indonesia. Dave Osborne, Hesston's director of international admissions, visited Indonesia several years ago. I attended one of his presentations about the college.

What attracts you to Business?
My parents have a little store back home and I liked to help them doing their business. Also, my mom graduated from a university back home with an economics degree, and she always taught me with some economic principles. Those two things made me want to study business.

How challenging are the academics in the Business program?
The Business program is not as hard as people think. Once you know the chapter, everything will be easy. Most of the examples that the professors used in class were from our daily lives. Moreover, the professors are really nice. They are really concerned with the improvement of their students.

What is your favorite Business course? Why is it your favorite?
I like all of my business classes. They were fun classes. But, my favorite classes were Financial and Managerial Accounting. I like them because I like to work with numbers (not numbers in Math, but numbers in Accounting) and graph. I also like to make budget reports and I learned that in Managerial Accounting.

Did you find opportunities or learning experiences outside the classroom?
Yes, I did. First, I worked as an Accounting tutor at the ACCESS lab. That gave me a chance to remember about the course that I already took and learn some new things. Second, since I am a "business" person, I like to calculate the advantages and the disadvantages before I decide to buy something.

What are the professors like in the department?
The professors--Vickie Andres, Bill Mason, Bruce Bradshaw, and Brenda Eitzen--are really cool professors. If we have a problem, they are more than happy to help us solve the problem. All the business professors always give us homework, which is good and bad. It is good because we can learn about the problems outside of class. But, the bad thing is we always have to spend time doing our homework, moreover if we have a homework in Accounting and our answers do not balance, it takes a long time to figure out the right answers.

What are some of your most memorable moments as a student at Hesston?
Last November (Nov. 3-6, 2005), I got a chance to go to Whistler, British Columbia, to attend MEDA conference (Mennonite Economic Development Association). That was a really good conference. I got a chance to meet a lot of business people, travel outside the States, get new experiences, and learn a lot of new things. During my two years at Hesston College, I made a lot of new friends from around the world.

What are your plans for after Hesston?
I am going to Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, next fall to study accounting.
