Initiated in 1995, the Hesston College Lifelong Education and Development (LEAD) program is a college-based older adult education system in the context of intergenerational interaction and education.
LEAD blends the campuses of Hesston College, all aspects of Schowalter
Villa retirement community (including assisted living, Lake Vista
independent living, Hickory Homes, and Hesston Wellness Center),
Hesston Intergenerational Child Development Center (which is attached
to the villa’s assisted living facilities), and Dyck Arboretum
of the Plains. This allows for intergenerational, interdisciplinary,
and inter-professional education and provides a synergy of the
resources of these entities. With the Hesston Intergenerational
Child Development Center (opened in 2005) our intergenerational
education may now include up to five generations at one time.
