A Day in the Life of a Hesston College Preschooler

Click on photos for larger versions.

Hesston College offers an Early Childhood degree with hands-on experience in the preschool lab. The day starts with precircle. When the children arrive, the students are waiting with an activity such as a book, science experiment, or game.

Precircle rolls right into circle with fingerplays, songs, and show & tell. We discuss the theme of the week and share a story with the children.

At circle time, the children are told about all the activities planned around the room. They will then decide which activity they want to start with. The activities include:

The Block Area

Dramatic Play

Computer
Library

Table Toys

Sensory Table
Science

Planned Art

Free Art

After cleaning up, the children discuss the weather and the date. Feeding the pet, praying, setting the table, ringing the bell, checking the weather, and doing the calendar are all jobs the children take turns doing.

The children move from transition to snack.

The snack may follow the theme with various creative combinations. After the children clean up their area, they go outside if the weather permits.

Small group follows large motor play. This is a time when the children explore various objects or situations with only a few children and a student teacher. In this picture, the children are in the process of writing their own books.

We end the day by reading a story and discussing our busy day. We send the children home with a goodbye song and help them gather their things.
