Efforts to recruit more North American racial/ethnic students at Hesston College resulted in the highest number of such students enrolled this fall in at least 10 years.
Hesston College Registrar Gerry Selzer reports that 53 North American racial/ethnic students enrolled this fall, two more than the previous high of 51 set last fall.
Clark Roth, vice president of admissions, notes that recruiting more North American racial/ethnic students is one of the college's five overarching strategies established by college administrators in 2002.
"We've made some strides in getting the word out to prospective students," Roth said. "The increase in racial and ethnic diversity among our North American students adds to the richness of the campus community."
In addition, full-time admissions counselor Ami Miller has given 50 percent of her time since last fall to recruiting those students.
The 53 North American racial/ethnic students represent 11 percent of the total student population of 462 this fall. That figure of 462 students compares to last fall's total student number of 477. This fall's enrollment is the third highest during the past 10 years.
States with the most students at Hesston College included Kansas (174), Indiana (34), Ohio (33), Iowa (28), Illinois (21), and Pennsylvania and Virginia with 18 each.
Meanwhile, 42 international students from 14 countries are attending Hesston College.
Of the 462 students enrolled this fall, 247 (or 53 percent) are Mennonites. The number of new students is 233, while 338 students are living in the dorms, the second highest in the past 10 years.
