Twelve inches of hair from a Hesston College sophomore are on their way to Locks of Love, Lake Worth, Fla.
Jon Huber, a sophomore from South Hutchinson, Kan., mailed his long locks yesterday (Wednesday, September 13).
His hair was cut a month ago on Sunday evening, August 13, by Marilyn Wilder, the wife of Campus Pastor Kevin Wilder, at the Wilder home. "I had to cut my hair as a second year aviation student, since we are asked to demonstrate professionalism," Huber explained. "I figured I'd make it worth it."
"It's something I can do for people with long-term hair loss," he said. "It's a way I can help."
Accompanying the hair is a donation of $168.77, money raised from students, faculty, and staff since Thursday, September 7.
Huber said his hair hadn't been cut since December 2004, when he had it cut for the wedding of his brother Tim. Tim Huber married Heidi Buller, the daughter of John and Chris Buller of Hesston.
At the time, Jon Huber was a senior at Nickerson High School. "The person who cut my hair sent it to Locks of Love," he said.
Huber, a member of South Hutchinson Mennonite Church, attends Shalom Mennonite Church in Newton.
Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss. Most of the children helped have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses provided help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.
