The Hesston College Alumni Association
invites Hesston College alumni and friends to attend events in Chambersburg,
Pa., October 2-4, 2004.
Internationally-acclaimed baritone
Tony Brown will sing a concert of African-American spirituals at Chambersburg
Mennonite Church, 1800 Philadelphia Ave., Saturday, October 2, at
7 p.m. A free-will offering will be taken.
Sunday, October 3, Brown will
provide special music at the 10:30 a.m. worship service at Cedar Street
Mennonite Church, 430 Cedar St., Chambersburg. Palmer Becker, a Bible
professor and pastoral ministries director at Hesston College, will
bring the morning message.
Brown will sing that evening during
the Franklin Mennonite Conference Assembly meeting that begins at
6:30 at Chambersburg Mennonite Church.
Brown will also be featured in chapel at Shalom Christian Academy,
126 Social Island Rd., Chambersburg, Monday, October 4, from 8:50-9:30
a.m.
Brown is a promoter of peace and
goodwill around the world and across the U.S. In 2002, he was the
invited guest of the U.S. State Department to Bosnia as a goodwill
ambassador in that multi-ethnic, war-torn country. Brown used spirituals
as a tool to assist in the process of healing and reconciliation.
In the fall of 2003, he was invited to tour Northern Ireland to bring
spirituals to the Protestant and Catholic conflict. He has recently
been invited to return there in 2005.
Brown has recorded three CDs.
The first one is titled Spirituals with cover art by the renowned
African-American artist Jacob Lawrence. His second recording, titled
Embracing American Song, is a collection of folk songs, sacred songs,
and popular songs of the 19th century. His third recording, in collaboration
with the Spirituals Project Choir of Denver, is titled Toil and Triumph.
While Brown also sings a standard
classical repertoire, he has made a specialty of performing “music
of the American experience.” This includes art songs, Broadway
show tunes and ballads, folk songs, American songs, and spirituals.
In addition to being a long-term
student of voice, Brown has had a professional career as a psychotherapist
and brings the depth of that experience to his work as peacemaker
and artist. Music critics around the country have applauded his performances.
He is currently artist-in-residence
and part-time professor in the sociology and history departments at
Hesston College in Hesston, Kan.
