Three basketball players at Hesston College have been selected to the All-Region VI, Division II, National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) men’s and women’s basketball teams.
Sophomores LaMont Russell, Wichita, Kan., and Mike Reece, San Antonio, Texas, were named First Team All-Region. Meanwhile, sophomore Roxanne Stauffer, Beaver Crossing, Neb., was named Second Team All-Region.
Russell averaged 17.5 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. He also shot 59.5 percent from the floor. Reece’s averages were 12.8 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game.
"This is the first time since I've been here that we have had two players named to the first team,” said men’s basketball coach Tim Swartzendruber. “I am thrilled for them and certainly proud of our basketball team for the season we just completed. Both of these young men are deserving of the honor."
At the end of the 2006-07 basketball season, Russell garnered a Second Team All-Region VI selection.
Meanwhile, Stauffer averaged 12.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per contest for the Larks women’s basketball team. She set a new single season free throw percentage record at .835 (76-91).
“Roxanne has one of the nicest skills set of any player I have ever coached,” said women’s basketball coach Joel Kauffman. “She is also one of the hardest working and a strong team leader.”
At the end of her freshman season, Stauffer was named to the All-Region VI First Team and was selected as a Third Team All-American (for Division II, NJCAA).
