Hesston College Athletic Director Art Mullet announced the appointment of Dustin Galyon, Hesston, Kan., as men’s basketball coach at the college Monday, March 17.
"Dustin brings to this position high energy and enthusiasm,” Mullet said. “His commitment to his faith and his loyalty to this institution will be important assets to his mission here."
Academic Dean Sandra Zerger described Galyon as “energetic and dynamic.”
“His recruiting skills are beyond comparison," she said. "He talks openly about his faith and its importance in his day-to-day life. Those involved in the interview process were impressed with his experiences as a campus leader on and off the court and how he will model that for his players, encouraging them to make the most of their years at Hesston."
Galyon is excited about the new challenge. "I'm thrilled with the opportunity to build relationships with players and help them to be successful in their faith journey, the classroom, and on the court.
"I visited Hesston College as a high school senior because [former coach] Luke Hartman invited me to give Hesston a try,” he explained. “As I was about to leave his office at the end of my visit, he asked me what my goals were for college.
“I thought I had it together to even know my goals at that point,” he said. “I told him [Luke] I wanted to go to a college where I could heighten my game, find success in the classroom, and further my walk with God. Luke convinced me to come to Hesston when he responded, 'We can do all three at Hesston, but we'll take them in reverse order.'
“That's what I want to do for players," Galyon said.
A 2004 graduate of Hesston College, Galyon holds a bachelor’s degree in communication, with a concentration in journalism and public relations from Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), Harrisonburg, Va., in 2006. Galyon has served as an admission counselor at Hesston College since May 2006; he will continue as part-time admissions counselor for Kansas.
A native of Sterling, Kan., Galyon played basketball competitively in high school (Sterling) and in college. While at Hesston, he was a starter and was team captain his sophomore year. At the end of his sophomore season (2004), he was named an Academic All-American in Division II of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
Galyon was also an assistant men’s basketball coach during the 2006-07 season.
At EMU, Galyon was a starter and team captain as a junior and a senior for the Royals. He was men’s basketball Scholar of the Year and Teammate of the Year during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons. In 2006, he was also selected as an NCAA Division III all-star for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, one of the top conferences in Division III.
Galyon replaces Tim Swartzendruber who resigned in January 2008 during his fourth season at Hesston College.
Hesston College is the two-year liberal arts college of Mennonite Church USA. In men’s basketball, the Larks compete in Division II of the NJCAA.
