The women's basketball team at Hesston College lost a hard-fought Region VI (Division II, National Junior College Athletic Association) championship play-off game Saturday evening, February 25 at Yost Center. The Larks lost to the Johnson County Community College Cavaliers, 66-53, ending their 2005-06 season with a 19-13 record.
"I thought my girls played hard and was proud of our effort," said coach Joel Kauffman. "However, it's tough to win a close game and make 28 turnovers!
"We've had a fine season, tying the school record for wins with 19," Kauffman pointed out. "I appreciated this team in so many ways, especially their ability to get along and enjoy each others success."
Meanwhile, Liz Sowers set two new records during the 2005-06 season. Sowers tallied 20 points against Johnson County Saturday evening, following a 19-point effort the evening before when the Larks defeated Brown Mackie College 73-45. That gave Sower 1,100 points for her career, exceeding the previous record of 1,041 points scored by Lisa Schmidt Graber during the 1995-96 and the 1996-97 seasons.
Sowers also broke the single season scoring mark of 569 points set by Graber during the 1996-97 season. Sowers finished with 606 points for the 2005-06 season
"Liz has been a joy to coach," Kauffman said. "She brings so much desire and competitiveness to each game. She's also a great teammate and contributes as much off the floor as she does on the floor. We will definitely miss her next year."
Following a visit earlier this month, Kauffman says Sowers has given a verbal commitment to Oakland University, an NCAA Division I school in Rochester, Mich. (near Detroit) as of February 20. If she attends Oakland University, Sowers will receive a full-ride scholarship.
