Explores why stories have been
around since the dawn of human history and why stories are found in
all cultures. Participants hear from a variety of storytellers, see
stories being told on video, and “listen” to stories on
the Internet.
Comm 111/112 Publication Seminar - Newspaper--1

Covers the fundamentals of newspaper
journalism and production. Students publish a campus-wide newspaper
regularly throughout the year. Positions include writing, editing,
photography, business management, and advertising design and lay-out.

Comm 117 Publication Seminar - Yearbook--2 hours
Focuses on production of college
yearbook. Ideal for student skilled in writing/editing, design, photography,
or computer. Preferred prerequisite: Comm 115 or experience in PageMaker.
Comm 125 Interpersonal Communication--3 hours
Seeks to improve the student’s
ability to build and maintain a variety of personal and social relationships.
Course content stresses basic interpersonal communication concepts
and relational theories as a means to build practical skills. Structured
reading, interactive learning strategies, and both classroom and online
discussions are used to explore verbal, nonverbal, intercultural,
relational, and family communication as well as theories and practice
in conflict resolution.
Comm 128 Introduction to Digital Media--3 hours
Introduces students to the basics
of producing a variety of digital media. Students will work with and
create web pages (FrontPage), digital still images (Photoshop), digital
audio (GarageBand), and digital video (iMovie or Final Cut Express).
Provides a foundation for students interested in learning the basics
of desktop media production and enables them as life-long learners
to feel comfortable in this new medium.
Comm 131, 132, 231, 232 Forensics--1 or 2 hours
Offers students experience in
intercollegiate speech competition. Students research, prepare, practice,
and perform at college tournaments in a variety of interpretive and/or
public speaking events. Participation in forensics will build research
and organization skills as well as public speaking and performance
skills. Credit hours awarded are determined by tournament participation
and the number of events prepared for competition by the student.
Comm 141 Introduction to Journalism--3 hours
Covers basic news and feature
writing techniques for print media. Includes a focus on journalism
issues and ethics. Taught in a workshop format. Students will write
news and feature stories for The Hesston College Horizon, the bi-weekly
campus newspaper. Prerequisite: grade of B or better in high school
senior English, College Writing I, or Honors College Writing. Offered
alternate years.
Comm 205 Business Communication--3 hours

Comm 206 Speech Communication--3 hours
Approaches public speaking as
part of a larger set of human communication skills that are best learned
through a combination of theory analysis and practice. After discussing
rhetorical and non-verbal communication principles and applying them
to in-class exercises, students create and deliver four to seven speeches
that stress audience analysis, organization, creativity, research,
and extemporaneous delivery.
Comm 260 Group Communication--3 hours
Focuses on developing skills for
collaboration within and between work-related groups. Emphasis is
on understanding group communication principles, group dynamics, and
group decision-making processes. Interactive learning exercises, structured
observations, and a team project help develop skills in group interaction,
leadership, conflict management, and group presentation.
