Tour Stop Spotlight

Milan is the capital of Northern Italy and serves as a center for both banking and fashion. The 2008 tour will spend three nights and two full days in this exciting city. In the heart of the city is the world’s third largest church, the Duomo (Cathedral), surrounded by a large piazza (plaza). If you are brave enough, you can climb to the roof of the Duomo and catch a great view of the city.
Just off of the piazza, is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. This covered street is thought to be the world’s oldest shopping mall, at least in modern times. Don’t expect any bargains here, but it’s still fun to look in the high-end stores with the latest Milan fashions.
Other highlights in Milan include Leonardo da Vinci’s painting The Last Supper, the La Scala Opera House, and a medieval castle called the Castello Sforzesco. We are hopeful that a concert in one of the old churches of Milan will come to fruition.

Host Gifts

Today is not too early to begin thinking about host gifts for the trip. You will stay in nine different homes for a total of 16 days. European tradition calls for the guest to bring a gift. Your gift need not be elaborate, but it ought to be an item that will connect the person with you when they look at it. Be creative! Talk to parents for suggestions. Keep in mind that you will receive a very significant gift of their time and hospitality.

Things To Do
  1. Obtain a passport if you do not have one. Check to make certain an existing passport is still current.
  2. Obtain identical photos, for use with passport application and other forms necessary for trip. U.S. citizens will need four identical photos. Walgreen’s in Newton will take these photos.
  3. Think through plans for payment. Contact parents. Contact HC Financial Aid. How about grandparents?
  4. Work on Host Gifts. (see above)
  5. Consider your luggage needs. If you don’t have an appropriate suitcase, you might consider requesting one for Christmas. Do this now. Keep a mind toward economy of packing. Remember that the smaller your suitcase, the happier you will be schlepping it all over Europe.
