The Hesston College women’s soccer team played host to Butler Community College (El Dorado, Kan.) and was defeated 19-0 on Wednesday. Hesston gave up a goal at the 1:55 mark in the first half to a talented Grizzly team, and the visitors were off and running.

The Larks had to fight through against a very tough opponent but also struggled to keep players on the field. Hesston came in short-handed and lost a couple more players to injury during the game. By the end of the first half the Larks were forced to compete with ten players.

“It won’t reveal this in the stats but this game brought out a lot of good things in our girls,” commented head coach Kurt Hostetler. “We played more aggressively, we kept our shape and formation much better and we showed a lot of heart. Going against a tough team like Butler made our team play harder.”

Hesston was led by freshman Kelsey Schrock (Wellman, Iowa) with two shots while fellow freshman Marly Richison (Houston, Mo.) and Mandy Kanagy (Timbersville, Va.) both recorded a shot on goal.

The Larks, now 0-4, head to Dodge City looking to pick up their first win of the season against Dodge City Community College on Saturday, Sept. 19, beginning at noon.      –written by John Oyer, HC student
