Larks roll in home opener

Myu Kobayashi scores as the first half winds to a close.

The Hesston College women’s soccer team kicked off the 2012 season in style with a 7-1 win over Tabor College JV.

Freshman Myu Kobayashi (Yokosuka Kanagawa, Japan) scored three goals in her college debut, while fellow freshman Kelli Christenson (Dayton, Ore.) added two goals and two assists in the win. Sophomore Mariah Martin (Glenwood Springs, Colo.) added two goals for the Larks, now 1-0 on the season.

Hesston gave up a third-minute goal to fall behind 1-0, but just two minutes later Christenson scored the equalizer to get the Larks’ offense rolling.

Hesston finished with a 13-6 advantage in shots-on-goal. Sophomore Alyssa Newswanger (Ephrata, Pa.) earned the win in the net. The Larks also had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

“We played well after giving up an early goal,” said Hesston coach Bryan Kehr. “It was a great learning experience, and I was very happy with our movement together as a team.”

The Larks open Region VI play on Wednesday, Aug. 29, when they host Dodge City (Kan.) CC at 5 p.m.
