The Hesston College baseball team enjoyed a notable 5-3 win over rival Brown Mackie College (Salina, Kan.) on Sunday, May 4, as the Larks earned their second Region VI title in as many years. The series-clinching win pushed Hesston’s overall record to 27-20, marking a program-best for wins in a season.
Larks ace Mangin Chacon (Harlingen, Texas) turned in an impressive outing on the mound to secure the game-five win. Pitching on just two days rest, the righty tossed shutout ball for seven frames allowing just five hits and a walk. For the series, Chacon threw 13 innings just one run allowed and 11 strikeouts.
Hesston won game one 9-5 on Thursday, May 1, before falling 1-0 to the Lions in the nightcap. BMC took a 2-1 series lead a day later courtesy of a 5-3 extra-inning win. Hesston responded with a 6-4 win in Friday’s second game that forced Sunday’s deciding game.
Hesston Baseball advances to the NJCAA Division II Plains District Championships, held May 16-18 in Oklahoma, with the winner earning a bid to the NJCAA World Series.
