The Hesston College baseball team won 2-of-3 in a weekend series against Southeast CC (Beatrice, Neb.) on Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27.

In Saturday’s game one, Hesston sophomore righty Brandon Kutrubs (Brunswick) spun a complete-game one-hitter, allowing just a single and a walk while striking out two in a 3-0 Hesston win. Pete Whitmer (London, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Zac Pearson (Many, La.) had two hits.

In the nightcap, Mangin Chacon (Harlingen, Texas) picked up where Kutrubs left off, as the Larks’ ace tossed a shutout of his own, scattering four hits and four walks with six strikeouts in a 7-0 Hesston win. Stephon Griddine (Grandview, Mo.) went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Pearson added a double in three at bats.

Game three saw Southeast avoid the sweep with a three-run top of the eighth that proved the difference in a 6-3 win.

“I was pleased with our effort and execution,” said Hesston coach Rob Ramseyer. “Our starters set the tone for a good weekend.”

The Larks close the regular season at 24-18 and will battle Brown Mackie College (Salina, Kan.) for the Region VI title in a best-of-five series May 1-3. The opening double header will be in Salina at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 1.
