The Hesston College women’s basketball team won a thrilling 86-85 win over Brown Mackie College (Salina, Kan.) on Saturday, March 1 in the first round of Region VI playoffs.
Makayla Ladwig (Wichita, Kan.) paced the Hesston offense with 24 points. Bethany Snow (Park City, Kan.) added 14 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Nikkita Lester scored 14.
Down 44-36 at the break and trailing by as many as 11 points early in the second half, Hesston made its move, pulling even with Brown Mackie seven minutes into the second half. The teams went back and forth for the next several minutes before an offensive burst by the Larks extended the lead, culminating in a Ladwig layup that gave Hesston a nine-point lead with 6:42 left.
Down five with less than a minute to play, BMC fought back and found itself with a chance to win as the Lions drew up an in-bounds play under its own hoop with 4.8 seconds remaining. Hesston would not be denied as its defense held strong sending the Larks to the second round of Region VI post-season play.
