Hesston hosted Northeastern Oklahoma (NEO) A&M (Miami, Okla.) Thursday and picked up an important 5-0 win. The win should help the Larks get on track as the season winds down towards the playoffs.
“This was a much needed win to help get us out of the rut we’ve been in,” said coach Kurt Hostetler. “Tonight the guys came out and played to win. It’s great to be on this end of things. This season has been tough on us so far. We have the players to do well, we’ve just needed to play with more passion and be a scrappier team.”
The Larks were led by freshman Hussein Abtidon (Mogadisho, Somalia) who netted two goals. Sophomores Alex Steiner (Kidron, Ohio) and Paul Schrag (Hesston, Kan.) and freshman Logan Waite (Winfield, Kan.) each added a goal. Freshmen Dylan Simmons (Rose Hill, Kan.) and Brad Knispel (Sarasota, Fla.) each had two assists to lead the team in that category. Freshman keeper Reid O’Brien recorded his second collegiate shutout.
“I’m excited for the guys, they played well, they deserve this win, and it was great to have nearly everyone contribute in this victory,” said Hostetler. “I’m looking to carry this energy and momentum into this weekend’s match against Region VI opponent Cowley County.”
The Larks host Cowley County on Saturday, beginning at 7:30, and will look for back to back wins to continue their momentum.
